Samana |
 |
The Samana Peninsula is located on the northeastern corner of the island. This mountainous peninsula has breathtaking bay views. Inland is the Cordillera de Samana, a chain of mountains whose peaks reach heights of more than 500 meters. More than 1000 Humpback Whales migrates to Samana Bay during the months of January to March. Excursions to view the whales up close are very popular. Situated in the extreme southwest of the Samana Peninsula is Haitises National Park. This diverse region has an abundance of plant species including the American Cedar, Dominican Mahogany, and Red and White Mangroves. Other treasures include a variety of bird species and caves with Pre-Colombian pictograms and petroglyphs. Las Terrenas, situated on the north side of the Peninsula, is the largest town in the area. The French and Italian influences provide an abundance of fine restaurants to enjoy.
